Structural Engineers and Glulam
Glulam is a proven structural material, but it is not always considered early in the design process. Where it is understood and evaluated from the outset, it can be assessed properly alongside other structural options and specified with confidence. AJ Laminated Beams exists to support informed, engineer-led decision-making by improving understanding of glulam as a structural material and ensuring it can be supplied accurately to specification.
Our Role in the Design Process
AJ Laminated Beams supplies and processes glulam beams to customer and engineer specification. We do not provide structural engineering services, design advice, or calculations.
Our role is to support engineer-led design by providing:
Clear information on glulam grades, availability, and standard sizes
Reliable stockholding and realistic lead times
Accurate cutting and machining to engineer-approved specifications
Practical product knowledge to support informed discussion
All structural design, calculations, and certification remain the responsibility of the appointed structural engineer.
Considering Glulam at the Right Stage
Many of the challenges associated with glulam arise when it is introduced late in the process, after another structural material has already been designed and calculated.
Where glulam is considered early, engineers are able to evaluate it on its merits using established design approaches, reducing the need for redesign, duplication of work, or unnecessary cost later in the project.
Early consideration allows glulam to be assessed as part of the structural strategy, rather than as a late-stage alternative.
A Defined, Standards-Based Material
Glulam has clearly defined structural properties and performance characteristics. Its behaviour is documented within European standards, allowing it to be designed and detailed using established methods where appropriate.
For engineers familiar with Eurocode-based timber design, glulam is a material that can be assessed with the same professional rigour as other structural options.
Our focus is on ensuring the material itself is clearly understood and accurately supplied to specification.
Engineers Experienced With Glulam
Confidence often comes from experience. The engineers listed below have practical experience working with glulam and are familiar with its specification and use within structural designs.
This list exists to support informed collaboration and early-stage discussion. It is intended as a reference point, not a recommendation or endorsement.
Important Clarification
AJ Laminated Beams does not recommend or endorse individual engineers. All engineers listed operate independently and remain responsible for their own designs, calculations, and professional obligations.
Clients should always satisfy themselves that any appointed engineer is appropriate for their project.

Inclusion on This Page
Engineers are included based on demonstrable experience specifying glulam. Inclusion does not imply preference, exclusivity, or endorsement.
Structural engineers with experience working with glulam who wish to be included can request inclusion by providing a brief overview of their experience.
Supporting Better Conversations
Better outcomes come from clearer understanding and earlier discussion. By improving access to information and making experience more visible, we aim to reduce unnecessary friction and help glulam be properly considered as part of modern construction.
If you would like to discuss availability, lead times, or supply considerations for an engineer-led project, you’re welcome to get in touch.
